Outdoor Education Mycology Guide / Fun-Guide Tour Guide

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Fun-Guide Tour Guides are responsible for leading engaging, educational hikes on Mount Seymour that introduce guests to the edible fungi and plants of the Pacific Northwest. Guides should be comfortable speaking to groups, have a genuine interest in mycology and plant identification, and be confident leading hikers safely through mid-mountain and upper-mountain trail terrain in all weather conditions.
 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • To uphold Mt Seymour’s mission “Being in the mountains is incredible. We exist to create wow experiences in a mountain environment for all skillsets and abilities.”
  • To uphold and promote Mt Seymour’s Core Values: Genuine Care, Pride & Passion, Integrity, A Fun & Family Feel, Courage & Respect.
  • Compliance with all Mt Seymour policies and procedures.  
  • Lead the 2-hour Goldie Lake Loop and/or 3-hour Deep Cove Lookout guided hikes, delivering an engaging and educational experience for guests of varying fitness and knowledge levels.
  • Deliver accurate, up-to-date identification information on common edible mushrooms and plants found on Mount Seymour, including preparation techniques.
  • Clearly communicate that foraging is prohibited in BC Parks, ensuring no plants or mushrooms are gathered or collected during the tour.
  • Distribute and walk guests through the reference booklet on local species.
  • Prepare and serve a warm cup of tea at the end of the tour.
  • Check guests in, confirm waivers are signed, and manage group pacing and timing to stay on schedule.
  • Maintain and restock guide equipment, reference materials, and tea supplies before and after each tour.
  • Deliver a safety briefing to all guests prior to departure.
  • Monitor trail conditions, weather, and guest well-being throughout the tour, adjusting pace or route as needed.
  • Carry and know how to use a first aid kit and communication device (radio/phone) at all times.
  • Understand and adhere to all emergency response and evacuation procedures outlined in the operations manual.
  • Ensure guests remain on marked trails and follow all BC Parks and Mt Seymour safety guidelines.

     

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE 

  • Strong public speaking and storytelling ability; comfortable engaging groups of up to 12+ guests.
  • Solid working knowledge of Pacific Northwest edible and non-edible fungi and plant species, or a strong willingness to learn and be trained.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, with a friendly, patient, and approachable manner.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage group timing, waivers, and equipment.
  • Ability to remain calm and use good judgment in the event of an emergency.
  • Background or strong interest in mycology, botany, biology, environmental education, or a related field is an asset.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).
  • Previous guiding, interpretive, or teaching experience is an asset.
  • Wilderness First Aid certification is an asset.
     

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to hike 2-3 hours over moderate to intermediate mountain terrain while leading a group and talking.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds for up to 2-6 working hours per day.
  • Ability to successfully navigate Mount Seymour Provincial Park trails.
  • Must be willing to complete a criminal record check.
  • Footwear: Closed-toe hiking footwear required.

     

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Casual part time position
  • Primarily weekends in October & November
  • Some weekday shifts may be available in the event of private group/corporate bookings
  • Hourly wage $19.50-$23.00 depending on experience and first aid qualifications
