Job Title:    Outdoor Education Manager – Maternity Cover
Reports to:    Director, Programs & Guest Experience

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:


Reporting to the Director, Programs & Guest Experience, this position is responsible for the successful and progressive operations of the Outdoor Education department.

The Outdoor Education Manager must apply an energetic, dynamic, and innovative approach to the creation, delivery, and facilitation of all programs. The Manager will be responsible for hiring, training, and overseeing a large team of interpretive guides. During the summer this position directs the popular Eco-Adventure Summer Camps, during the winter the Outdoor Education Manager oversees all snowshoe operations, including rentals, trail maintenance and a full calendar of interpretive snowshoe tours.

Other responsibilities will include aspects of the operation such as staffing, budgeting, financial reporting, strategic planning, and purchasing/maintaining snowshoe equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, payroll, performance review and management of a team of up to 40 seasonal staff who work in the Outdoor Education department in the Winter & Summer.
  • Inspire the team to deliver wow experiences to all guests.
  •  Oversee all Outdoor Education programs, ensuring that program content is high in quality and standards.
  •  Design and implement new programs, or refresh existing programs, based on market demand and innovative ideas.
  •  Provide the Director, Programs & Guest Experience with the pricing and inventory of programs and products that pertain to the Outdoor Education department in a timely manner.
  • Set growth targets for visits.
  • Prepare annual operating plan and budget and forecast monthly to ensure goals are achieved.
  •  Implement methods to streamline or automate workload to improve productivity and efficiency.
  • Work with Safety Manager to ensure appropriate safety standards are being met and communicated.
  • Purchase equipment and supplies necessary for program delivery & oversee practicum students and volunteers to ensure they fulfill their requirements.
  • Foster a positive teamwork environment.
  •  Manage high level escalations and guest issues, liaise with the Guest Experience management team when needed to inform them of guest issues that may make their way to the Guest Experience team.
  •  Attend bi-weekly department managers’ meetings and participate in Strategic and Master Planning if required.
  • Work with industry associations and partners including Non-Profits.
  •  Prepare and implement contingency plans when system outages occur.
  •  Raise the profile of snowshoeing to public and other mountain staff by educating, inspiring, and providing opportunities to snowshoe in a positive environment.
  • Provide orientation and training to other departments (i.e. Group Sales, Guest Experience, Patrol, Rentals and Retail) to ensure correct information is being provided to guests. 
  •  Communicate with Group Sales Registrars and Call Centre Staff on a regular basis to ensure Outdoor Education programs are successfully booked.
  •  Oversee the setup, monitoring and take down of the Discovery Trail system throughout the winter season.
  • To attend meetings with the Director, Programs & Guest Experience and department head team
  • Other related duties, as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Recreation Leadership, Education, Hospitality Management or Business Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as Word, Excel
  • Previous budgeting experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish working relationships with guests, staff, and outside organizations.
  • Strong leadership and managerial experience
  • Formal Interpretive training and experience 
  • Strong organizational skills to provide timely and high-quality service to Outdoor Education guests.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to speak in public.
  • Strong team work ethic
  • The ability to multi-task and work well under pressure
  • Background in outdoor recreation/education, biology, environmental science
  • Capable of leading and mentoring a team of Outdoor Educators  
  • Strong outdoor experience and knowledge of wilderness skills, safety, and etiquette 
  • Current first aid certification or be willing to obtain.
  • Program development experience with a foundation in interpretive and experiential education
  • Knowledge of local natural history
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and positive attitude
  •  Weekend work required during the winter season.
  • Capable of hiking over rough mountainous terrain for extended periods while carrying group and programing supplies
  • Class 5 driver’s license (abstract required) Class 4 would be an asset.
  • Reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to complete a criminal record check. 
  • Must be willing to work on a mountain top in challenging weather and environmental conditions.

    DESIRED:

  •  Knowledge of local First Nations history and culture 
  •  Training or experience working with children with unique needs. 
  • Familiarity with Mt Seymour summer hiking trails 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • 12-month maternity cover with potential option for year-round permanent employment
  • Start Date:    Flexible between beginning of March-mid-April 2025
  • Salary range-$55,000-$70,000  based on experience and qualifications.
  • Vacation pay accrual at the rate of 6% per bi-weekly pay period to provide 15 days’ vacation per anniversary year.
  • 50% of employee benefit costs including medical, dental, extended health, life insurance, and long-term disability after 3 months of continuous full-time employment.
