Snow School Manager

We are currently recruiting for a Snow School Manager to join our Management Team.  This position reports to our General Manager and oversees the entire operation of our Snow School Department which employs approximately 170 seasonal employees.

Job Description
Summary: Reporting to the General Manager / Programs Manager, this position is responsible for overseeing the successful operations of the Snow School Department.

To successfully manage the Snow School, the manager must be able to provide leadership to his/her staff, be a collaborator able to work effectively with a wide range of individuals, be able to develop strong relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders and be an effective and accomplished communicator, be organized and able to lead a large and complex department.  Be innovative and strategic, with the ability to develop the Snow School to reach its goals and objectives.

  • Design, develop, implement, and oversee all Snow School programs, ensuring programs are based on marked demand, are innovative and high in quality.
  • Develop systems and processes to ensure the smooth operation of the department overall.
  • Work with Guest Services to develop products and capacities that meet customer demand while maximizing revenue and optimizing use of instructor staff.
  • Develop a strong departmental training and orientation plan to ensure that all instructors receive high quality and consistent training to ensure the quality of snow school products is consistent.
  • Maintain a regular “on-hill” presence with Snow School Instructors and Guests to ensure quality of service delivery and departmental standards are maintained.
  • Develop and maintain excellent communications with all stakeholders including Schools and Groups Manager and Coordinators, Group Organizers, School Teachers, Parents and group leaders, guest services and rentals department etc.
  • Set and review prices for lesson programs and camps.
  • Provide promotional lesson program content for sales and collateral materials.
  • Set and regularly review growth targets for ski and snowboard school visits.
  • Oversee the hiring, training and ongoing evaluation and scheduling of all Snow School staff.
  • Coordinate and provide training for instructors.
  • Oversee the Administration of the snow school department including the scheduler, private lesson coordinator, and other administration staff.
  • Manage the instructor volunteer program.
  • Ensure processes are in place to successfully collect and review credentials i.e. CASI, CSIA or equivalent designations.
  • Ensure processes are in place to collect and review all required paperwork such as valid work visas, Background checks, onboarding packages, instructing credentials etc.
  • Prepare and oversee the annual budget for the Snow School.
  • Develop and execute strategic planning for the Snow School.
  • Work with both the Marketing Department to promote and develop Snow School Products
  • Work with the Guest Experience department to develop efficient and accurate registration procedures for lesson participants.
  • Work with the Human Resources Manager to develop effective policies and programs for the Snow School Department including such things as pay and compensation, bonus programs, instructor referral programs etc.
  • Maintain accurate statistics and performance reports for all programs.
  • Prepare and implement an effective recruitment strategy including domestic and international applicants to ensure the Snow School is staffed to meet predicted business levels.
  • Oversee appropriate social events/activities/ Recognition Programs for the department ensuring they comply with all Mt Seymour’s policies.
  • Assist with Summer Operations and Programs as the business evolves both within Mt Seymour and Sea to Sky Park Services
  • Potential for assuming the management of other ancillary operations and departments as the business evolves.
  • Other related duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Certification through the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance
  • Certification through the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors
  • Degree or Diploma in Recreation Leadership, Hospitality Management, Business Management or similar.
  • Training and proficiency with software applications such as Word, Excel, Access.
  • Progressive experience within the ski and snowboard industry, recreation industry or similar industry with a minimum of four years in a supervisory/management position.
  • Previous budgeting experience.
  • Ability to manage a large and complex department including up to 160 instructors and ancillary staff and related systems and software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, able to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues and guests.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak in public.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to recruit, train, develop and motivate a large seasonal team of staff.
  • Strong team player.
  • Interest in and potential for growth and progression within the organization
  • The ability to work well under pressure.
